An electric car works better in Crete than the island's reputation suggests, provided you can charge it where you sleep. The grid is now tied to the mainland twice, an owner in an apartment block has a legal right to a charger in their own parking space, a pure electric car pays no registration tax, and the state subsidy has been extended to the end of 2026. What is uncertain is public fast charging: nobody publishes an official count for Crete, and a long mountain day is where a gap shows. As checked in November 2026 against the transport ministry's charging registry, HEDNO, the transmission operator, law 4710/2020, the Κινούμαι Ηλεκτρικά decision and the tax laws.

I am not an electrician or an engineer, and this is not technical or legal advice. A licensed electrician should size any charger against your supply, and anything that touches an apartment block's common areas belongs with the administrator and a lawyer.

**An electric car in Crete in one minute.** Crete has been linked to the mainland by a **1 GW cable since 24 May 2025**, and its electrical isolation is **completely lifted**. The ministry's registry counted **10,155 public charging points** in Greece on **31 October 2026**, with no regional split; press counts put Crete at roughly **270–300**; nationally about four in five are AC. An apartment owner may fit a charger in **their own parking space** after **written notice and 30 days**; the assembly can object only for **substantial obstruction**, by **501/1000** (**law 4710/2020, art. 22**). HEDNO allows a charger up to **7.4 kVA** on an existing single-phase supply. **Κινούμαι Ηλεκτρικά** pays individuals **€3,000** for a pure electric car up to **€50,000** pre-tax, plus **€1,500** for scrappage and **€400** for a smart charger, with applications until **31 December 2026**. Pure electric cars pay **no registration tax** and fall in the **€0 road-tax band**.

## The grid: two cables to the mainland

For years Crete ran on its own power stations. The transmission operator [IPTO](https://www.admie.gr/kentro-typoy/deltia-typoy/se-leitoyrgia-i-ilektriki-diasyndesi-kritis-attikis) reports that a first link to the Peloponnese came in 2021 and that the 1 GW Crete–Attica interconnection began carrying power on 24 May 2025, which together completely lift the island's electrical isolation. The Region of Crete still complains, in June 2026, of a lack of network space, but its complaint is about grid space for new generation, the issue that also touches rooftop systems in [solar panels and net metering](https://honestcrete.com/buying/solar-panels-and-net-metering-crete-home/). A car on a domestic supply is a load, not a generator.

## Public charging: use the official map

Under [article 13 of law 4710/2020](https://www.taxheaven.gr/law/4710/2020/arthro/13), every publicly accessible charging point must be registered in the ministry's registry (Μ.Υ.Φ.Α.Η.). Its [public page](https://electrokinisi.yme.gov.gr/public/ChargingPoints/) counted 10,155 charging points at 4,336 locations nationally on 31 October 2026, but showed no breakdown by region. For Crete the counts disagree: one motoring site's own map counted 25 DC fast chargers and 242 AC units in May 2024, including restricted chargers at hotels and car parks, while an April 2026 report put the island at around 300 public stations, citing ministry data, and an August 2026 report gave about 300 points without naming a source. Nationally, about four in five public chargers are AC.

The state reCharge app reads the same registry, and the regulator ΡΑΑΕΥ runs a tool comparing public chargers' price per kWh. None of these counts says where on the island the fast chargers stand, so check the map for the actual route and plan a day in the south or the mountains around where a fast charger actually is.

## Charging at home: a house, and an apartment block

In a detached house it is mostly an electrician's job. [HEDNO](https://www.deddie.gr/en/support/regulatory-affairs-section-network-users-department/), the grid operator, says a charger drawing up to 32 A, or 7.4 kVA, can go on an existing single-phase 8 or 12 kVA supply, and a smart charger with load management avoids raising the agreed supply. A new supply can be single-phase 8 or 12 kVA or three-phase 15 kVA at the same connection cost, and HEDNO recommends three-phase. An old meter is swapped for a smart one at no extra cost once the operator is told, the installer files a solemn declaration, and an EV-only supply can ask for a day/night tariff. Variable household tariffs ran roughly €0.15–0.30 per kWh in September 2026; a new rural connection is covered in [new electricity and water connections](https://honestcrete.com/buying/new-electricity-and-water-connections-crete/).

In an apartment block, [article 22 of law 4710/2020](https://www.taxheaven.gr/law/4710/2020/arthro/22) gives the owner or exclusive user of a parking space the right to install a charger at their own cost, fed from their apartment's supply or a new one. The steps: written notice to the administrator with proof of receipt, then 30 calendar days. The general assembly can object only on grounds of substantial obstruction of other spaces or common areas, by owners holding 501/1000, with a report by an electrical engineer filed with the building service; the same route can later stop an unsafe charger. A shared charger in the common areas needs 501/1000 to begin with. How blocks decide things generally is in [apartments and complexes](https://honestcrete.com/buying/apartments-and-complexes-crete/).

## The subsidy and the tax breaks

Κινούμαι Ηλεκτρικά, the state purchase grant, was extended by [joint ministerial decision 115362/2026](https://www.taxheaven.gr/circulars/54518/115362-13-07-2026): applications until 31 December 2026, payments by 31 December 2027, and an earlier close if the money runs out, on a budget of €76 million. For individuals the [programme platform](https://kinoumeilektrika3.gov.gr/) lists €3,000 for a pure electric car priced up to €50,000 before tax and bought from 7 June 2025, plus €1,500 for scrapping an old car, €400 for a smart charger, €500 under 29, €1,000 for disability and €1,000 or €2,000 for large families. The €1,000 island bonus is for companies, not residents. In November the platform still showed an old 30 June 2026 date beside the new one, and an older budget table; the gazette decision is the later text.

On tax, article 121 of law 2960/2001 exempts pure electric cars from registration tax and halves it for hybrids, or cuts it by 75% at 50 g/km or less. [Article 55 of law 5177/2025](https://www.taxheaven.gr/law/5177/2025/arthro/55) taxes electric cars registered since November 2010 on CO2 emissions, and the bottom band is €0 (0–122 g/km for cars registered from 2021); electric cars registered earlier are exempt.

## Distances, mountains and summer heat

The Region of Crete puts the island at [about 260 km long](https://www.incrediblecrete.gr/en/useful-info/geographical-position/), so a coastal day trip sits within most electric cars' range. The interior is the test: Psiloritis rises to 2,456 m and the Lefka Ori to 2,453 m, and the roads to the high villages climb hard and come back down. A climb drains a battery faster than the brochure figure, the descent returns only part of it, and summer air conditioning draws on the same battery. Leave a margin on any mountain or south-coast run, and know where the next fast charger is before you set off.

## Buying here or bringing one

The subsidy pays on a purchase or long-term lease inside the programme, so check eligibility before importing a car instead. Registration, insurance, KTEO and road-tax deadlines are as for any car in [owning a car as a Crete resident](https://honestcrete.com/buying/owning-a-car-as-a-crete-resident/); importing one, with or without the transfer-of-residence relief, is in [bringing your car to Greece](https://honestcrete.com/buying/bringing-your-car-to-greece/).

## The honest downside

Public fast charging is the weak point, and nobody publishes an official count for Crete: the registry gives a national total, and the island figures in circulation disagree. On a mountain or south-coast run a dead fast charger can end a day. The subsidy is first come, first served and closes when the money does. Apartment rights cover your own space, not a charger in the common areas, and a hostile assembly can still drag things out with an engineer's report. And without a socket at home, an electric car in Crete depends on the public network.

*Disclosure:* Disclosure: Honest Crete does not sell or list property. Enquiries sent from this section go to a licensed estate agent, not to us; the full statement is below. Nothing in this article names a car maker, a dealer, a charging network or operator, an electricity supplier, an installer or any other business; the transport ministry, HEDNO, IPTO, the regulator ΡΑΑΕΥ and the Region of Crete are named as the public institutions they are.

**The verdict.** **Worth it if** you can charge at home or in your own parking space, most of your driving is local or along the coast, and you can buy before the subsidy closes on 31 December 2026 or the money runs out. **Skip it if** you have no off-street charging, you regularly drive long mountain or south-coast routes, or the sums only work with a subsidy that may already be spent by the time you apply.

## Quick answers

**Are there enough public chargers for an electric car in Crete?**

Nobody publishes an official count for Crete. The transport ministry's registry counted 10,155 public charging points across Greece on 31 October 2026 but shows no regional split; press counts put Crete at roughly 270–300, and about four in five public chargers nationally are slower AC units. Check the official map for the route before a trip into the south or the mountains.

**Can I install an electric car charger in my apartment building's parking in Greece?**

Yes, in your own space. Article 22 of law 4710/2020 lets the owner or exclusive user of a parking space install a charger at their own cost after written notice to the building's administrator and a 30-day wait. The general assembly can object only for substantial obstruction, by 501/1000 and with an electrical engineer's report filed with the building service.

**Is the Κινούμαι Ηλεκτρικά subsidy still open in November 2026?**

Yes, until 31 December 2026 or earlier if the money runs out, under joint ministerial decision 115362/2026. An individual gets €3,000 for a pure electric car priced up to €50,000 before tax, with extras such as €1,500 for scrapping an old car and €400 for a smart charger. The programme's own page still showed an older 30 June 2026 date alongside the new one.

**Do electric cars pay road tax in Greece?**

Pure electric cars pay no registration tax under article 121 of law 2960/2001. For annual road tax, law 5177/2025 taxes electric cars registered since November 2010 on their CO2 emissions, and the bottom band is €0, which is where a car with no exhaust emissions sits; electric cars registered before then are exempt. Hybrids get a 50% or 75% cut in registration tax.

**Can Crete's electricity grid handle electric cars?**

Supply is no longer the problem. Crete has been linked to the Peloponnese since 2021 and to Attica by a 1 GW cable since May 2025, which the transmission operator says completely lifted the island's electrical isolation. The constraint the Region of Crete describes in June 2026 is network space for new generation; a car charging on a household supply is a load, not a generator.

**Can I charge an electric car from my existing home supply in Crete?**

Usually. HEDNO, the grid operator, says a charger of up to 32 A, or 7.4 kVA, can be connected to an existing single-phase 8 or 12 kVA supply, and a smart charger can manage the load so the supply need not be increased. A new supply can be three-phase 15 kVA at the same connection cost. A licensed electrician files the declaration.
