# Chania or Heraklion? The Honest Answer on Which City to Stay In

> Crete's two big cities are three hours apart and nothing alike. Chania is the beautiful one, with the Venetian harbour, town beaches and the west on its doorstep; Heraklion is the real city, with Knossos, the great museum, the main airport and the middle of the island within reach. How to choose, and when to stay in neither.

Visitors choosing between Crete's two cities are usually choosing between two different trips. **Chania** is the beautiful one: a Venetian harbour and old town, town beaches a walk away, and the White Mountains, the gorges and the west-coast beaches within reach. **Heraklion** is the real city: Crete's capital, noisier and less pretty, but home to Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, the island's main airport and the shortest drives to the centre and the east. Our answer for a first holiday is Chania — unless the trip is built around the Minoans or the east, in which case Heraklion earns its keep, and for a week in either half of the island a smaller town may beat both. Populations, museum details, distances and bus times come from the 2021 census, the museums' own pages, the KTEL bus operator and the official 2026 Blue Flag list, checked in September 2026; the judgements are our own, from living on the north coast.

- **Airports:** Heraklion's is about **5 km** east of the city; Chania's about **14 km** away on the Akrotiri peninsula.
- **Heraklion's big draws:** **Knossos**, about **5 km** south; the **Archaeological Museum**, **€20** (€12 reduced).

## Chania: the beautiful base

Chania's old town wraps around a Venetian harbour, with fortifications begun in 1538, arsenals along the quay and a lighthouse at the entrance. It is the most beautiful urban setting on Crete and, in summer, one of the busiest. The new **Archaeological Museum**, opened in April 2022 in the Chalepa district, holds more than 3,500 objects, around a thousand of them on show for the first time; entry is €15, and it is closed on Tuesdays.

The practical advantages are just as strong. Chania's municipality has fifteen Blue Flag beaches in 2026, including Nea Chora within walking distance of the old town. The airport is fourteen kilometres away. And the reasons people come to West Crete — Samaria and the other gorges, Balos, Falassarna, Elafonisi, the villages of Apokoronas — are all a day trip away.

## Heraklion: the real city

Heraklion is Crete's capital and, by population, far bigger than Chania, and it feels it: traffic, apartment blocks, a working port, students and year-round life. Its Venetian walls, up to 40 metres thick with seven bastions, still ring the centre, and the **Koules** fortress, built between 1523 and 1540, guards the entrance to the old harbour and is open to visitors.

The case for Heraklion is what lies within a few kilometres. The **Archaeological Museum** holds the greatest collection of Minoan art anywhere: in the 2026 summer season it opens 08:00–20:00, from 13:00 on Wednesdays, and costs €20, €12 reduced. **Knossos** is about five kilometres south of the centre. The main airport is five kilometres east. And the drives to central Crete, the Lasithi plateau, Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga are much shorter than from Chania.

## How to choose

Choose **Chania** if it is your first trip, you want a beautiful town to come back to every evening, and your plans lean west: gorges, famous beaches, mountain villages. Choose **Heraklion** if the trip is built around the Minoans, you want central and eastern Crete, or you like cities that are not dressed for visitors. **The honest downside**

Chania in July and August is crowded, expensive and a long way from Knossos and the east. Heraklion is loud, often ugly outside the centre, and has no good beach of its own. Staying in either city means driving out for most of the best of Crete.

**The verdict.** **Pick Chania if:** it is your first trip and you want beauty, town beaches and the west on your doorstep.
**Pick Heraklion if:** Knossos, the museum and central or eastern Crete come first, or you want a real city.
**Skip both if:** you want a beach holiday — a smaller coastal town will serve you better.

**Is Chania or Heraklion better to stay in?**

For most holidaymakers, Chania: the Venetian old town and harbour are the most beautiful urban setting on Crete, there are good beaches within the municipality, and the gorges and beaches of the west are close. Heraklion is better for a short stay built around Knossos and the Archaeological Museum, for central and eastern Crete, and for anyone who wants a real working city.

**How far apart are Chania and Heraklion?**

About 140 km along the north coast road. The KTEL express bus between the two cities takes around two hours, and several departures run each way daily; by car, allow a little over two hours. Rethymno is roughly halfway.

**Which is bigger, Chania or Heraklion?**

Heraklion, by a wide margin. In the 2021 census the Municipality of Heraklion had 179,302 residents, against 111,375 for the Municipality of Chania — and only about 54,600 in Chania's central municipal unit. Heraklion is also Crete's capital, with an urban population of about 211,000.

**Does Heraklion have a good beach?**

Not in the city itself. The nearest long beach is Ammoudara, just west of the city, which holds a Blue Flag in 2026 but belongs to the neighbouring Municipality of Malevizi. Chania is better served: its municipality has 15 Blue Flag beaches in 2026, including Nea Chora, a walk from the old town, and Chryssi Akti.

**Is it worth visiting Knossos if I stay in Chania?**

Yes, but it is a long day: Knossos is about 5 km south of Heraklion's centre, which is itself around two hours from Chania. If Knossos and the Archaeological Museum are priorities, staying one or two nights in Heraklion saves most of that driving.
