# Chrissi or Gavdos? The Honest Comparison of Crete's Two Southern Islands

> Two islands off Crete's south coast that are different kinds of trip: Chrissi, an uninhabited juniper reserve off Ierapetra that you could not step onto in 2026, and Gavdos, a lived-in island below Sfakia that runs on a ferry and needs nights. Rules, crossings, the November timetable, weather, camping and who each suits.

Chrissi and Gavdos are both "the island south of Crete", and they are different trips. **Chrissi**, off Ierapetra in the east, is an uninhabited reserve of dunes and junipers that excursion boats visit in summer — and in 2026 nobody was allowed ashore. **Gavdos**, below Sfakia in the west, is a lived-in island, Europe's southernmost, reached by a ferry that decides how long you stay. Our answer: Chrissi for a swim day from the east, on its terms; Gavdos only with nights to give and a spare day for the sea. Described from our own visits; distances, prices, hours and rules are a check of published sources, November 2026.

**The honest facts**

- **Chrissi:** uninhabited; [8 miles south of Ierapetra](https://www.incrediblecrete.gr/en/place/gaidouronisi-or-chrysi/) by the Region of Crete's figure, nine nautical miles by another guide; 30–60 minutes by boat; no sunbeds or food, and the only shade, under the junipers, is off limits.
- **Gavdos:** about 32 km², 142 residents (2021 census), roughly 26 nautical miles south of Chora Sfakion, by encyclopaedia figures.
- **Boats:** Chrissi — excursion boats from Ierapetra, May to October by published accounts; no landings since May 2026. Gavdos — the ferry from Chora Sfakion or Paleochora, all year; plan two nights at least.
- **Fares:** Gavdos roughly €30 one way from Chora Sfakion, about €35 from Paleochora, on [the ferry's published price list](https://anendyk.gr/prices/); subsidised sailings differ.
- **November:** no Chrissi excursions expected; Gavdos has three sailings a week from each of its two ports.

## Chrissi is a reserve you see from the water

Chrissi is low, sandy and protected: Natura 2000 site GR4320003, about 546 hectares, 485 of them land, per [the Filotis biotope database](https://filotis.itia.ntua.gr/biotopes/c/GR4320003/), its dunes wooded with two junipers, *Juniperus macrocarpa* and *J. phoenicea* — the local "cedars".

A Ministry of Environment and Energy decision in [Government Gazette B' 2859 of 22 May 2026](https://www.dikaio.ai/prod-assets/fek/2026/02/02859.pdf), valid two years and, unlike the May–October bans of 2022–2025, with no season, lets visitors ashore only at jetties still to be built, keeps them to the marked beaches, closes the interior and bans sitting in the junipers' shade. An October 2026 press report described the practice: no landings since May, only boats circling and people swimming ashore ([press report](https://fonimaleviziou.gr/2026/10/27/sto-mikroskopio-trion-foreon-i-nisos-chrysi-draseis-gia-ti-diasosi-tou-oikosystimatos/)). Read literally, the decision also ties swim stops to those jetties; that report says swimming ashore is still allowed. Ask in Ierapetra. Our [Ierapetra and Chrissi guide](https://honestcrete.com/guides/ierapetra-and-chrissi-honest-guide/) covers the town.

## Gavdos is a lived-in island that runs on the ferry

Gavdos has a harbour at Karave, roads, rooms, tavernas and year-round residents. The Region of Crete calls it [the southernmost inhabited border of Greece](https://www.incrediblecrete.gr/en/place/gavdos/); Cape Tripiti is Europe's southernmost point. [Our Gavdos guide](https://honestcrete.com/guides/gavdos-island-honest-guide/) covers the beaches.

The ferry sails from Chora Sfakion and Paleochora, some days direct, others calling at Loutro or Sougia and Agia Roumeli. [The ferry's published timetable](https://anendyk.gr/routes/) gives departures, not crossing times; in November the direct boat leaves Chora Sfakion at 09:00 and starts back from Gavdos at 11:30, so allow the morning. Gavdos tickets are not sold online; foot passengers buy them locally, vehicles book by phone.

That timetable is why Gavdos needs nights: in November the boat leaves the island again between 11:30 and 12:50 on the day it arrives.

## November: one island off, the other on a thin timetable

Chrissi's excursions run May to October by published accounts. Gavdos is reachable, thinly: the November–December timetable shows three sailings a week from [Chora Sfakion](https://honestcrete.com/guides/loutro-and-sfakia-honest-guide/) — Thursday to Saturday until 8 November, Monday to Wednesday after — and three from Paleochora. On 28 October 2026 bad weather cancelled sailings on two ships.

A weather cancellation earns a refund, not a hotel, as our [island-hopping guide](https://honestcrete.com/guides/island-hopping-from-crete/) explains. Confirm your room is open first: small coastal villages can be almost shut by mid-November, as [our October and November guide](https://honestcrete.com/guides/crete-in-october-and-november/) notes.

## Camping, shade and what stays on the island

On Chrissi there is nothing to negotiate. The 2021 joint ministerial decision that zoned the island ([Government Gazette D' 617/2021](https://biodiversity-info.gr/wp-content/uploads/NisosXrysiFEK617_21.pdf)) prohibits overnight stays by visitors and collecting plants or beach material. The Filotis record says why: camping damages the junipers' roots, and visitors carry off shells by the hundred.

Gavdos is contested. Free camping under the junipers is a tradition, but law 392/1976, as a June 2026 report summarises it, bans tents on beaches, in forests and at archaeological sites, with fines and arrest ([press report](https://www.iefimerida.gr/ellada/telos-anohi-eleytheroy-kampingk-eleghoi-syllipseis-prostima)). In April 2026 police removed shelters at Lavrakas and Agios Ioannis, which the municipality considers illegal; it wants both beaches protected and guarded, but no formal decision had been reported by late June, and tents were back ([press report](https://www.tovima.com/stories/gavdos-dispute-deepens-over-demolition-of-beach-shelters/)). [Our camping guide](https://honestcrete.com/guides/camping-and-campervans-in-crete/) sets out the law.

**The honest downside**

Chrissi, as it stands, is a boat ride to look at an island you may not walk on, with no shade you may sit in, under rules that do not cleanly settle even the swim stop. Gavdos costs days, and in November one bad forecast can add several more.

**The verdict.** **Pick Chrissi if:** you are staying in the east between May and October, want a day of clear shallow water from a boat, and accept that the island is off limits.
**Pick Gavdos if:** you can give it two nights plus a buffer day, are happy with simple rooms and a ferry-shaped plan, and want the end of the map.
**Skip both if:** you have a flight the next day, travel in November without flexible dates, or want shade and sunbeds.

## Quick answers

**Is Chrissi or Gavdos better?**

Chrissi is better for a single summer day from the east of Crete: an excursion boat from Ierapetra, roughly 30 minutes to an hour each way, and a swim off a protected island of dunes and junipers. Gavdos is better for anyone who can give it two nights or more, because it is a lived-in island with rooms, tavernas and a ferry that does not allow a real day trip. They suit different trips more than they compete.

**Can you land on Chrissi island in 2026?**

Not in practice. A Ministry of Environment and Energy decision published in Government Gazette B' 2859 on 22 May 2026, valid for two years and with no seasonal limit, allows visitors ashore on Chrissi only at jetties still to be built under the island's management plan, keeps them to the marked beaches and closes the interior and the shade of the junipers. An October 2026 regional press report said landings had been banned since May, with boats circling the island and people swimming to the shore.

**Can you do Gavdos as a day trip?**

Not on the November 2026 timetable. The ferry from Chora Sfakion or Paleochora leaves Gavdos again between 11:30 and 12:50 on the same day it arrives, which leaves no meaningful time ashore. Plan on at least two nights, and on a spare day in case the sea cancels the boat back.

**Can you visit Chrissi or Gavdos in November?**

Gavdos, yes, on a thin timetable: the ferry's published timetable for November and December shows three sailings a week from Chora Sfakion and three from Paleochora, and bad weather cancels sailings. Chrissi excursion boats are a May-to-October business by published accounts, so expect none in November and ask at Ierapetra harbour if you hope otherwise.

**Can you camp on Chrissi or Gavdos?**

Not legally on either. On Chrissi, overnight stays by visitors are prohibited under the 2021 joint ministerial decision that protects the island. On Gavdos free camping is a long tradition, but Greek law 392/1976 bans tents on beaches and in forests, and in April 2026 police removed beach shelters at Lavrakas and Agios Ioannis that the municipality considers illegal.
