# Kissamos or Paleochora? The Honest Comparison of Two Bases in the Far West

> Two working towns at the western end of Crete, about 42 km apart by road: Kissamos on the north coast, with the Balos boats, Falassarna and Polyrinia close by and a port that sails north all year; and Paleochora on the south coast, with a beach on each side of its peninsula, the coastal ferry to Sougia and Gavdos, and the E4. Drive times, buses, beaches and what stays open in winter, compared.

Kissamos and Paleochora sit at opposite ends of one short road across western Crete, about 42 km apart, facing different seas. **Kissamos**, on the north coast, is a working port town with the Balos boats, Falassarna and Polyrinia close by and the shorter drive from Chania airport. **Paleochora**, south on the Libyan Sea, is a small town on a peninsula with a beach on each side, the coastal ferry to Sougia and Gavdos, and the E4 path. Elafonisi is under an hour from both. Our answer: Kissamos for a north-west beach week and a quick arrival; Paleochora for a slower stay with boats and walking. Written from published sources and our own guides to the two towns; distances, prices, hours and rules are a check of published sources, November 2026.

**The honest facts**

- **Between them:** about 42 km, roughly 50 minutes by road (route-planner estimate); Paleochora lies south of Kissamos.
- **From Chania airport:** Kissamos about 51 km, an hour; Paleochora about 85 km, an hour and forty minutes (route-planner estimates, free-flow).
- **Blue Flags 2026:** Kasteli/Mavros and Molos–Plaka at Kissamos; Pachia Ammos and Chalikia in Paleochora, Grammeno just west of it ([Blue Flag Greece](https://www.blueflag.gr/el/awards/2026)).
- **Boats:** Kissamos has seasonal day boats to Balos and Gramvousa; Paleochora the coastal ferry to Sougia, Agia Roumeli and Gavdos, on a reduced winter timetable.
- **Buses:** [KTEL Chania–Rethymno](https://www.e-ktel.com/en) lists routes to both from Chania — about 50 minutes to Kissamos, 2 hours 10 to Paleochora, on a third-party timetable listing.
- **Elafonisi:** roughly 40 km from Kissamos, 48 km from Paleochora, about 50 minutes from each (route planner).

## Kissamos: the north-west on the doorstep

[Kissamos](https://honestcrete.com/guides/kissamos-and-the-far-west/) is the town people drive through on the way to Balos, and that is the case for sleeping there. The day boats to Balos and Gramvousa leave from its port in season; by car, [Balos](https://honestcrete.com/guides/balos-lagoon-honest-guide/) means about 8 km of gravel track and a steep path down. Falassarna is about 16 km west, some 20 minutes by route planner, and our guide puts the Polyrinia ruins ten minutes inland. The town beach flies a Blue Flag.

It is also the easy arrival, about an hour from the airport, and its port keeps a year-round ferry north to the Peloponnese, on the schedules our Kissamos guide checked.

## Paleochora: the south-west by boat and on foot

Paleochora is built out onto a peninsula, the remains of the Venetian castle of Selino at its tip, with Pachia Ammos on the west side and Chalikia on the east; [our Sougia and Paleochora guide](https://honestcrete.com/guides/sougia-and-paleochora-honest-guide/) explains why one is usually sheltered. On this coast the boat is transport. On [the coastal ferry's published timetable](https://anendyk.gr/routes/), from 1 to 8 November 2026 it leaves at 08:30 on Mondays and Tuesdays for Sougia, Agia Roumeli and [Gavdos](https://honestcrete.com/guides/gavdos-island-honest-guide/), with a direct Gavdos run on Wednesdays; from 9 November to 31 December those move to Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. [Adult one-way fares](https://anendyk.gr/prices/) are listed at €16 to Sougia, €25 to Agia Roumeli and €34.80 to Gavdos (subsidised Gavdos sailings differ). The same timetable page notes a cancelled Paleochora sailing on 28 October, so leave slack.

On foot, the E4 runs east to Sougia past Gialiskari and ancient Lissos: about six hours, easy and open all year by [the Region of Crete's description](https://www.incrediblecrete.gr/en/place/paleochora-sougia/).

## Elafonisi is close to both

The lagoon at the south-west tip lies west of Paleochora and south-west of Kissamos, about 50 minutes from each by route planner. In summer Paleochora adds a KTEL bus, listed at 10:00 out and 16:00 back on a June timetable listing, and excursion boats. Treat both as summer options: the coastal ferry's November timetable does not include Elafonisi, and bus timetables change with the season, so off-season plan on driving to [Elafonisi](https://honestcrete.com/guides/elafonisi-beach-honest-guide/).

## The season and who each suits

Our winter guide notes that resorts and small coastal villages largely close from November to April. These two are towns: our Kissamos guide lists banks, a post office, a health centre and supermarkets, and describes waterfront tavernas that feed the town all year; a regional guide lists shops, a health centre and pharmacies in Paleochora. What stops is the summer trade — the Balos boats, beach services, the Elafonisi runs. Paleochora keeps its ferry, to Sougia two days a week from 9 November.

Flying into Chania for a week of north-west beaches: Kissamos. Boats and the E4, and the drive does not put you off: Paleochora — and [Plakias or Paleochora](https://honestcrete.com/guides/plakias-or-paleochora-honest-comparison/) weighs it against another quiet south-coast base.

**The honest downside**

Kissamos is a working town without gloss, and Balos at midday in summer is a crowd whichever way you arrive. Paleochora is the end of the line: nearly two hours from the airport by car, more by bus, and its boats stop when the wind blows. In winter both are quiet, with thin timetables.

**The verdict.** **Pick Kissamos if:** Balos, Gramvousa and Falassarna are the point, you want the shorter airport drive, and a working port suits you better than a resort.
**Pick Paleochora if:** you want boats along the roadless coast, Gavdos, the E4 to Sougia and a beach on each side of town, and you do not mind the longer road in.
**Skip both if:** you want nightlife, big resort facilities or day trips to the east of the island.

## Quick answers

**Is Kissamos or Paleochora a better base for west Crete?**

Kissamos is the better base for the north-west: Balos and Gramvousa by boat or dirt road, Falassarna about 20 minutes away and the Polyrinia ruins just inland. Paleochora is the better base for the south-west: the coastal ferry to Sougia, Agia Roumeli and Gavdos, and the E4 path east to Sougia. Elafonisi is under an hour from either.

**How far apart are Kissamos and Paleochora?**

Kissamos and Paleochora are about 42 km apart by road, roughly 50 minutes by route-planner estimate, with Paleochora south of Kissamos on the opposite coast. The road crosses the mountains of western Crete, so allow longer than the distance suggests.

**How long is the drive from Chania airport to Kissamos or Paleochora?**

Route-planner estimates put Kissamos about 51 km and an hour from Chania airport, and Paleochora about 85 km and an hour and forty minutes. Both are free-flow figures; summer traffic around Chania makes them longer.

**Can you get to Kissamos or Paleochora by bus?**

Yes. KTEL Chania–Rethymno lists bus routes from Chania to both towns. A third-party timetable listing, updated in August and September 2026, gave about 50 minutes and roughly €5.50 to Kissamos, and about 2 hours 10 minutes and roughly €8.30 to Paleochora. Timetables change with the season, so check KTEL's current one before travelling.

**Is Kissamos or Paleochora open in winter?**

Both are working towns, so both have life in winter: Kissamos has banks, a post office, a health centre and supermarkets, and Paleochora shops, a health centre and pharmacies. What winds down is the summer trade — beach services and excursion boats. Paleochora's coastal ferry keeps a reduced winter timetable, sailing to Sougia on two days a week from 9 November 2026.
