Koutsouras strings along the south-coast road a few minutes before [Makrigialos](https://honestcrete.com/guides/makrigialos-honest-guide/) and gets read as scenery by most drivers — a mistake with a gorge in it. Behind the village climbs the Red Butterfly Gorge (Kapsas/Koutsouras gorge), named for the clouds of red butterflies that gather in early summer, and at the village's edge a volunteer-planted coastal park gives the shore rare pine shade. It is the modest, useful, honest stop of this coast.

**The honest facts**

- **The village:** working and unposed — tavernas, kafeneia, bakeries and mini-markets serving residents first; prices to match.
- **The beaches:** long pebble-and-sand stretches either side of the centre, tamarisk and pine patches for shade, sparse organisation (a few sunbeds in season around €6–8); the Dionysos park section is the shaded family pick.
- **The gorge:** the marked path enters just above the village; the first 30–45 minutes deliver the narrows and, in season (roughly May–July, nature permitting), the butterfly gatherings that named it. Continue toward Orino village for the full 2–3 hour ascent, or turn where satisfaction peaks. After rain, respect the watercourse.

## The honest half-day

Morning gorge leg while shade holds, monastery on exit, swim at the pine-park beach, taverna lunch among locals, and onward to Makrigialos or [Myrtos](https://honestcrete.com/guides/myrtos-village-honest-guide/) with the day's boxes quietly full. As a base, Koutsouras suits budget stayers who prefer their village un-curated; most will use it as the excellent pause it is.

**The honest downside**

The road bisects village and shore — background traffic hum is part of the deal; the beaches are honest rather than beautiful; and the butterflies keep their own calendar — outside their season the gorge is simply a good gorge.

**Worth your time if:** you like your stops functional, real and quietly rewarding.
**Skip it if:** only headline beaches move you — Makrigialos' shallow sweep is eight minutes on.
