## Who bases here

Families with small children, first and foremost — the water does half the parenting. Also couples escaping resort volume, and shoulder-season travellers exploiting the south side's extra warmth in May and October. A car unlocks the far east; without one, the beach and village sustain a genuinely lazy week.

## The daily shape

Beach until the early-afternoon peak, long harbour lunch, siesta, and a gorge walk or drive when the light softens. Repeat with minor variations. Makrigialos does not do plot twists; it does reliability with sea view.

## Getting there

Makrigialos is on the south coast about 25–30 minutes east of Ierapetra and 45 from Sitia over the hill road, which puts it roughly two hours from Heraklion and a little under that from the Malia end of the resort coast via Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra — a relocation, not a day trip. Fly into Heraklion, hire at the airport, and treat the drive as the first scenic leg rather than a transfer. Without a car the bus chain exists but is slow; the point of this corner is to arrive once and stop moving.

## The beaches, one by one

The main sand runs long and gently organised — sunbeds roughly €7–12 — with the fishing-harbour end the prettiest for an evening drink. For variety, Diaskari and Langada are a few minutes east, smaller and a touch wilder, with the same forgiving shelf. ## A week here, honestly

Three or four beach days need no plan at all. For the others: the Pefki gorge walk from the balcony village above, down to the sea in an easy two hours with a taxi back up; a morning at the Ferma and Agia Fotia coves a few minutes west; Ierapetra for a proper town and the boat to Chrissi; and, with a car and an early start, the far east — Sitia, the palm beach at Vai, Zakros — as one long day. The evenings are a promenade and a harbour dinner, and the terrace tavernas in Pefki are the upgrade when you want a view with the grill.

**The honest downside**

Excitement is not stocked: nightlife is minimal, the surrounding greenhouse patches are unlovely, and strong swimmers may find the endless shallows slightly comic.
