Every stretch of usable sand on the resort coast, ranked with reasons — where families win, where the wind bites, what each section costs.
The strip’s beaches get dismissed by people who drove past at noon and praised by brochures that never mention the meltemi. The truth sits in sections: this coast is a chain of distinct stretches with different sand, shelter and crowd economics. Ranked honestly, for actual use:
The honest facts, section by section
- 1. Stalis main beach — the family benchmark.
- Long, sandy, shelving so gently that toddlers get fifty metres of confidence. Organised nearly wall-to-wall (roughly €8–15 the set), calm mornings, choppier meltemi afternoons. The west end runs quieter.
- 2. Potamos (Malia west) — the strip’s best sand.
- Wide, dune-backed, with the river mouth and space the town beaches lack; part organised, part free. The walk from central Malia filters the crowd. Wind-exposed: glorious calm days, kite-festival on strong ones.
- 3. Star Beach zone (Hersonissos east) — the activity beach.
- Waterpark-style facilities, music, watersports; sand adequate, energy maximal. Choose it deliberately or avoid it precisely.
- 4. Hersonissos town front — convenience over beauty.
- Narrow urban strips of sand between platforms and harbour; you swim where you already are. Fine for a dip, never the day’s destination.
- 5. Malia town beach — the party’s beach.
- Sandy and serviceable, dense with the strip’s demographics and inflatables. Buzzy by design.
- 6. Sarantaris / Anissaras coves — the rocky quiet flank.
- Small pockets and platforms west of Hersonissos: clearer water, fewer people, less sand. Snorkel-leaning.
If the sand starts repeating itself, the boat trips from this coast are the honest way to reach water the road cannot.
Choosing by the day you actually have
With small children. Stalis, west end, before eleven. The shelf is the flattest on the coast and the west end keeps the inflatable-hire density down. Second choice is Potamos on a calm morning — more space, slightly deeper entry.
With teenagers. The Star Beach zone, and go early enough to get a base. It is loud, commercial and exactly what it says; the mistake is arriving at two expecting to find room.
On a windy afternoon. None of the above. This coast faces north and the meltemi lands square on it. The rocky pockets at Sarantaris hold their water longer than the open sand, and if the flags are properly up, drive: Agia Pelagia twenty-five minutes west sits behind headlands that do real work.
With a snorkel. Sarantaris and the Anissaras platforms. There is no seagrass drama here and nobody will call it a reef, but the water clears fast off the rock and there is more to look at than the sand stretches offer.
When you want the beach to be the whole day. Potamos. It is the only stretch on the strip with enough width, dune and free space to justify an umbrella, a cool bag and no plan.
Sunbeds, and what they actually cost
Two beds and a parasol runs roughly €8–15 for the set across the strip, with the higher end at Stalis centre and the Star Beach zone. A few operators waive or discount the fee if you eat at the attached taverna — worth asking rather than assuming, because it is rarely advertised.
The free stretches shrink each season and they are not evenly distributed: the west end of Stalis, the middle of Potamos and the gaps between Hersonissos platforms are where a towel still works. Arriving after ten in August means paying, walking, or both.
The two escapes
When the strip feels used up: Sissi’s coves, fifteen minutes east, swap volume for pocket-sized charm; Voulisma, forty minutes east, plays the turquoise card the strip cannot. Both are covered in their own guides.

The meltemi builds afternoons and hits this north-facing coast square: mornings are the reliable swims everywhere above; on flagged afternoons Stalis and Potamos whip up first. Flip your day accordingly — beach until two, pool or trip after.
The honest downside
Nothing on the strip itself is a screensaver beach — the value is convenience, services and warm shallow water, delivered at density. Sunbed-row economics also mean the free-towel zones shrink every season; arrive early to claim yours.
