Crete in April and May: The Honest Guide to the Green Months
Wildflowers, walking weather, open sites and Easter — but also a sea that is still cool, no lifeguards until June, and summer services that start later than people think. What April and May in Crete are really like, with Easter 2027 on 2 May.
April and May are Crete’s walking months and some of its best value: the island is green, the flowers are out, the archaeological sites are on their long summer hours and the crowds have not arrived. What they are not is beach months. The sea is still cool, lifeguards do not start until June, and some of the summer machinery — the Samaria gorge, the resort bus routes, the boat trips — starts later than people assume. In 2027 Easter falls on 2 May and shapes the whole spring. This guide is a check of published sources — the National Observatory of Athens climate tables, the park authority, KTEL and the Region of Crete — in October 2026.

- Rain
- about 30 mm on 3–4 days in April, 13–15 mm on 2 days in May.
- Sea
- still cool — roughly 16–17 °C in April, 19–20 °C in May.
- Easter 2027
- Sunday 2 May; Good Friday 30 April; Holy Saturday falls on 1 May, Labour Day.
- Lifeguards
- not required until 1 June.
- Samaria
- opened on 19 May in 2026; closed until further notice as of 25 October 2026.
- Wind
- lighter than the summer meltemi.
- Flowers
- spring is when the flora is at its best, in the Region of Crete’s words.
April: green, quiet and half-open
April is spring proper. The hills are green, the days run to about 20 °C on the north coast by the National Observatory’s Heraklion table, and rain is still possible. The coast opens through the month, often around Easter, so early April finds plenty of hotels and tavernas still shut, as our month-by-month guide puts it.

The evenings are the thing people pack wrong. Average minimums are 12.0 °C at Heraklion and 11.1 at Souda, lower in the mountain villages, which is fleece weather; the packing guide has the rest. The sea, at roughly 16–17 °C, is a dare rather than a swim; no official monthly average was available to check, so treat that figure as rough.
May: the island opens
By May the coast is open for business and the days reach the low-to-mid 20s, with almost no rain — about 13–15 mm on two days. KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi starts some seasonal resort and hotel routes in late April and May; in 2026 several began on 20 April and 11 May. The Samaria gorge waits for the park authority: in 2026 it opened on 19 May, once the annual maintenance was finished, and the authority’s ticketing site said on 25 October 2026 that it was closed until further notice. Boat trips and beach buses are seasonal too; check their start dates.
1 May, Labour Day, is a statutory holiday and one of the handful of days a year the state’s archaeological sites close; our holidays guide has the list. Around 20 May the Battle of Crete is commemorated in Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania. The sea warms to roughly 19–20 °C by late May, but lifeguards are required on organised beaches only from 1 June, so May swimming is unsupervised.
Easter 2027, and what it changes
Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027, three weeks later than 2026’s 12 April. Holy Saturday lands on 1 May, so Labour Day and the biggest weekend of the Greek calendar arrive together. Rooms in towns and famous villages go months ahead; Good Friday and Easter Sunday close most of the island, and sites close on Easter Sunday. The upside of so late a date is the weather: a late Easter gives the best odds of a warm midnight service.
Walking, flowers and the wind
The Region of Crete’s guide to the mountains calls spring the moment when the flora is at its best, counts over 1,700 plant species recorded on the island, many endemic, and notes the botanists who come each year for the wild orchids and endemic tulips. Gorges carry water in spring and most waterfalls run until the end of it. The same guide warns that the highest mountain areas keep snow until late June, so spring is for gorges, coasts and foothills, not for the summits.

The wind is kinder than in summer. The National Observatory’s Mediterranean wind climatology finds April winds generally weak, with the Aegean reaching about 7 m/s, and in May most of the sea does not exceed 5 m/s; the strong meltemi belongs to June, July and August.
The honest downside
Spring is cheaper and greener because the summer has not started, and that cuts both ways. The sea is too cool for most people to swim for long, no beach is legally required to have a lifeguard, and the summer services start on dates that move: the Samaria gorge opened only on 19 May in 2026. In 2027 the Easter and Labour Day weekend will fill rooms and close shops at the same time. And April can still rain on a planned beach day.
Worth it if: you want walking, wildflowers, open sites and an Orthodox Easter, with swimming as a bonus rather than the point. Skip it if: you want warm-sea beach days with everything running — come in June or in September instead.

This guide is a check of published sources, not a site visit; climate figures are the National Observatory of Athens tables for Heraklion and Souda, wind from its Mediterranean wind climatology, and dates and openings were checked against the park authority’s Samaria announcements and ticketing site, KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi’s timetable index and the Region of Crete’s guide to the mountains for the date shown at the top of this guide. Easter dates are calculated; sea temperatures are rough figures, not official averages. Nobody pays to be featured in a guide — no business, no sponsor, no paid mention, ever. Is Crete warm in April and May?
Crete is warm by day and cool at night in spring. The National Observatory of Athens tables give Heraklion an average maximum of 20.2 °C in April and 23.5 °C in May, with average minimums of 12.0 °C and 14.9 °C. Chania's station at Souda is almost identical, so pack a fleece for the evenings.
Can you swim in Crete in April or May?
Some people do, but the sea is still cool: roughly 16–17 °C in April and 19–20 °C in May by this site's month-by-month figures. Lifeguards are required on organised beaches only from 1 June, so spring swimming is unsupervised. Late May on a sheltered beach is the realistic start of the season.
When is Orthodox Easter in 2027?
Easter Sunday is 2 May 2027, with Good Friday on 30 April and Easter Monday, a public holiday, on 3 May. Holy Saturday falls on 1 May, Labour Day, so the biggest weekend of the Greek year and a statutory holiday arrive together. Rooms for that week should be booked early.
Is the Samaria gorge open in May?
The Samaria gorge usually opens at some point in May, on a date set by the park authority. In 2026 it opened on 19 May, once the annual maintenance of the trail and facilities was complete. On 25 October 2026 the park's ticketing site said the gorge was closed from both entrances until further notice, so check its announcements before planning a spring walk.
Are April and May good for walking in Crete?
For most walkers, yes. The Region of Crete says the island's flora is at its best in spring, with over 1,700 plant species recorded, and the gorges still carry water. The highest peaks keep snow until late June, so spring walking means gorges, coasts and foothills rather than summits.
