Crete in October and November: The Honest Guide to What Stays Open
Warm sea, emptier roads and the raki, chestnut and olive seasons — but also closing resorts, shorter hours, vanishing flights and the first serious rain. What October and November in Crete are really like, month by month.
October is the best-kept secret of the Cretan year and November is where the secret starts to cost you something. The sea is still warmer than in June, the light is soft and the island’s own calendar — raki, chestnuts, olives — takes over from the tourist one. But the resorts close, the flights thin out and the first real storms arrive. Figures below come from Greece’s weather-service climate normals, the Ministry of Culture and the transport operators, checked in September 2026.

October: still summer, with gaps
For most of October Crete feels like a quieter September. The beaches are warm, the north-coast resorts are open until late in the month, and the crowds have thinned enough that places such as Balos become pleasant again. The catches are all in the last week: hotels, beach bars and tavernas close in waves, boat trips stop, and the clock change takes an hour of evening away.
28 October, Ochi Day, is a national holiday — a Wednesday in 2026 — with school and military parades in every town. Shops and offices close; our holidays guide explains what that means. In late October the villages around Elos in western Crete hold their chestnut festival; in 2025 it ran over three days, 24–26 October, but the 2026 dates had not been published when this was checked.
November: the island goes back to itself
By November the resort strips are shuttered, and the island’s working towns take over. Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos are living cities with year-round restaurants, shops and markets. 11 November is the feast of Agios Minas, Heraklion’s patron saint, and a local holiday in the city.
The weeks around it belong to the island’s own seasons. Raki distilling runs from the autumn into early winter — dates vary by village and grape harvest — and the olive harvest starts in November, with nets under the trees across the countryside. On 8–9 November Arkadi Monastery commemorates the 1866 siege, one of the defining days of Cretan history.
Weather and the practical catches
Autumn rain in Crete tends to come as a few heavy storms rather than steady drizzle, and they can be violent: in October 2022 flash floods killed two people, including at Agia Pelagia, after more than 140 mm fell on Heraklion in a day. Watch the forecast, keep away from dry river beds in a storm and take the civil-protection alerts seriously. Mediterranean “medicanes” do reach Crete occasionally but are rare.
The practical squeeze is transport. The winter flight schedule removes many direct routes from the last Sunday in October — and in May 2026 one large low-cost airline announced it would suspend its off-peak Crete flights from this winter — so late-autumn trips are more often routed through Athens. Buses switch to winter timetables too. Check both before booking.
The honest downside
The exact thing that makes October wonderful — the island emptying — makes November patchy. A resort that was lively on 20 October can be closed on 1 November, sites close earlier, and one wet week can undo a beach holiday. If you want summer, go early in October. If you want Crete as the Cretans live it, November is honest, cheaper and quieter, and a car is close to essential.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in Crete in October and November?
Yes, for most people. Average sea temperatures off Heraklion are around 22–23 °C in October and 20–21 °C in November, warmer than much of June. The air is the thing that cools: evenings in November are jacket weather.
How much does it rain in Crete in October and November?
Heraklion's long-term normals show around 60 mm a month in both October and November, over roughly five to six rainy days. Chania, in the wetter west, averages more — about 61 mm in October and 87 mm in November. Rain tends to come as a few heavy storms rather than drizzle.
When do hotels and tavernas close in Crete?
Most resort hotels and beach tavernas close around the end of October, with some staying open into November. Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos are working towns and stay open all year; small coastal villages can be almost shut by mid-November.
When do archaeological sites switch to winter hours in Crete?
Greek archaeological sites and museums have moved to winter hours on 1 November under recent ministerial decisions, with shorter afternoons until the end of March. The exact 2026–27 hours for each site are published each autumn, so verify seasonally.
Are there flights to Crete in November?
Fewer. The airlines' winter schedule starts on the last Sunday of October — 25 October in 2026 — and many seasonal direct routes to Heraklion and Chania stop then. Year-round connections run mainly via Athens and Thessaloniki.
