East or West Crete? The Honest Answer for a First Trip
Crete is about 260 km long, and a week is not enough for all of it. The west has the big mountains, the gorges and the famous lagoon beaches; the east has Spinalonga, the palm beach, Minoan towns and quieter roads. How to choose, and why Heraklion sits in the middle of the decision.
Crete is too long for one week, and the question that follows every first booking is which half to choose. The short answer: the west for mountains, gorges and the famous lagoon beaches, with Chania as the most beautiful town base on the island; the east for a quieter trip built around Spinalonga, the Mirabello bay, Minoan towns and the palm beach at Vai. Heraklion and Knossos sit in the middle and work as a day trip from either. The island’s dimensions and drive times below come from the Region of Crete and route planners, checked in September 2026; the judgements are our own, from living on the north coast.

The case for the west
The west is where Crete is most dramatic. The White Mountains fill the horizon from Chania, and around fifty gorges cut through them to the south coast — Samaria, Imbros and Aradena among them. Chania’s old harbour is the best-looking town on the island for evenings, and the far-west beaches are the ones on the posters. Rethymno, halfway along, gives the west a second good town base. The trade-off is popularity: the famous beaches are busy in summer, often a long drive on slow roads, and the gorges need planning. If your first trip is about landscape, walking and big-name beaches, the west is the answer — and the choice between its two towns is in Chania or Rethymno.
The case for the east
The east is gentler and quieter. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda sit around the Mirabello bay, with the island fortress of Spinalonga offshore; past them the north coast empties towards Sitia, Vai’s palm grove and the far-eastern coves. The Minoan world is thick on the ground — Gournia, Zakros, Palekastro — and the Lasithi plateau is an easy inland day. The middle, and the airports
Heraklion is not a half but a hinge. Knossos and the archaeological museum are a day trip from anywhere between Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos, and the airport decides more than people expect: flying into Heraklion favours the centre and east, flying into Chania favours the west. How to choose
Seven days, first visit, wanting variety: west, based in Chania or Rethymno. Seven days, wanting calm, archaeology and short drives: east, based around Agios Nikolaos. The honest downside
Whichever half you pick, you leave something out, and the island is too big to “just pop over” to the other side for a day. The west’s highlights come with crowds and long drives; the east’s quiet comes with fewer headline sights and, beyond Agios Nikolaos, fewer choices of where to stay and eat.
Pick the west if: it is your first trip and you want mountains, gorges, Chania and the famous beaches. Pick the east if: you want calm, shorter drives, Spinalonga and Minoan sites — or you have already done the west.

Is East or West Crete better for a first visit?
West Crete, for most first-time visitors: Chania's old harbour, the White Mountains and their gorges, and the famous west-coast beaches give the most variety within an hour or two of one base. East Crete is the better choice for a quieter trip built around Spinalonga, the Mirabello bay, Minoan sites and less traffic.
Can you see both East and West Crete in one week?
Only by spending much of the week driving. Crete is about 260 km long; route planners put Chania to Agios Nikolaos at roughly three hours and Chania to Sitia at about four. In a week, pick one half and add the centre — Heraklion and Knossos — as a day trip.
Which airport should I fly into for East or West Crete?
Chania airport for the west, Heraklion airport for the centre and the east. Heraklion is also the practical gateway to Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia, while flying into Heraklion for a stay near Chania adds a drive of a little over two hours each way.
Where are the best beaches, East or West Crete?
The west has the famous names — Balos, Elafonisi, Falassarna — and more of them, but they are exposed, busy and often a long drive. The east has Vai's palm beach, the sheltered Mirabello bay and the empty coves around Xerokampos, with less of a crowd.
Is the east of Crete less touristy?
Beyond Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, generally yes. The far east around Sitia is the least developed part of the north coast, with quieter roads and smaller villages, while the west has both Chania's busy summer and the remote south-west.
