Rethymno or Heraklion? Which City to Base Yourself In
Crete's third city against its capital. Rethymno gives you a preserved Venetian–Ottoman old town and a long beach you can walk to; Heraklion gives you Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, the main airport and the port. How to choose by the days you actually plan, and when to split the week.
Rethymno and Heraklion sit an hour and a quarter apart on the same coast and sell different trips. Rethymno does two things at once: a preserved Venetian–Ottoman old town and a long sandy beach that starts where the old town ends, with the south coast over the hill. Heraklion is Crete’s capital and its crossroads: the Archaeological Museum, Knossos five kilometres south-east, the main airport, the main ferry port and the short drives east. Our answer for a holiday is Rethymno; for a short city stop or a Minoan trip, Heraklion. Described from our own visits; figures checked against published sources in October 2026. This page completes the set with Chania or Rethymno and Chania or Heraklion.
The honest facts
- Size (2021 census, as published)
- Heraklion municipal unit 156,842 (municipality 179,302); Rethymno municipal unit 38,759.
- Between them
- about 80 km, roughly 1h15–1h20 by car (route-planner estimate); KTEL buses Rethymno to Heraklion 17 a day, 06:30–23:00 (timetable from 13 October 2026).
- Airports
- Heraklion’s is about 5 km from the city; Rethymno has none and sits about 1h15–1h30 from either Heraklion or Chania airport.
- Ferries
- Heraklion’s port has daily sailings to Piraeus on two routes and, in summer, daily routes to the Cyclades.
- Beaches
- Rethymno’s town beach is 12 km long, running east; the municipality has 14 Blue Flag beaches in 2026. The Municipality of Heraklion has none on the list.
- Heraklion’s draws
- the Archaeological Museum, €20 (€12 reduced), summer hours to 31 October; Knossos about 5 km south-east.
- Rethymno’s draws
- the old town under the Fortezza, begun in 1573; Arkadi roughly half an hour inland.
- Rooms (rough bands from our guides, July 2026)
- Heraklion centre double about €55–85 shoulder, €75–120 summer; Rethymno old-town guesthouse often €70–110 in season.
Rethymno: old town and sand in one base
Rethymno’s old town is one of the best-preserved in Crete: Venetian doorways, Ottoman balconies, minarets, a small lighthouse harbour, and the Fortezza on the headland, begun two years after the corsair Uluç Ali looted and burned the town. The University of Crete’s humanities and social-science schools are here, so the town keeps a student life in winter.
The second half of the case is the beach. It begins at the old town’s edge and runs east as an organised strip through Missiria and Adele, which is where most of the municipality’s fourteen Blue Flags are. The catch is that Rethymno is two products under one name: old town for atmosphere, the strip for sand, and never deep in the strip if the old town is why you came. The detail is in where to stay in Rethymno.

Heraklion: the hub with the museum
Heraklion is bigger, louder and less pretty; its case is everything within a few kilometres. The Archaeological Museum holds the great Minoan collection; until 31 October it opens 08:00–20:00, from 13:00 on Wednesdays, with shorter winter hours (verify seasonally), and Knossos is a short bus or taxi ride south-east. The airport is on the edge of the city, the Piraeus boats dock a walk from the centre, and the old core inside the walls is compact. The full case is in is Heraklion worth staying in.
What it lacks is a beach of its own: Ammoudara, the long strip just west of the city, belongs to the Municipality of Malevizi.

Day trips: centre-west against centre-east
Rethymno faces west and south. Arkadi monastery is about half an hour inland, Plakias and Preveli are roughly 50 minutes over the mountains, Margarites and the Amari valley are close, and Chania is about an hour and a quarter along the coast (route-planner estimates).
Heraklion faces east and into the middle. Knossos and the Archanes wine villages are minutes away, Phaistos about an hour south, and Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the Lasithi plateau a sane day out — from Rethymno, the same eastern day costs over two hours’ driving each way.
Evenings and winter
Rethymno’s evenings happen in the old-town lanes and around the harbour; Heraklion’s in the café streets and wine bars of the centre, louder and more Greek. Both are university cities that stay alive in winter — the beach resorts largely do not.
Pick by who you are
- A week, beach and atmosphere together: Rethymno, old town or the near end of the strip.
- Two or three nights around Knossos and the museum: Heraklion.
- No car: Heraklion for buses in every direction; Rethymno works too, with hourly coaches both ways along the coast.
- South-coast swimming on the menu: Rethymno, the shortest run over the hill.
The honest downside
Rethymno has no airport, a town beach whose harbour end is its weakest stretch, and an old town where cars stop at the walls. Heraklion has no beach of its own, concrete and traffic beyond the walls, and bar noise in the best streets to sleep in. Each is a long drive from the other’s best day trips.
Pick Rethymno if: you want an old town and a beach in one base, and your days lean west and south. Pick Heraklion if: Knossos, the museum and the east come first, or you are arriving or leaving by the airport or the ferry. Skip both if: the holiday is sand and nothing else — a beach resort will serve you better.

Is Rethymno or Heraklion better to stay in?
Rethymno for most holidaymakers: it has a preserved Venetian–Ottoman old town and a long sandy beach starting at its edge, so atmosphere and swimming come in one base. Heraklion is better for a short stay built around Knossos and the Archaeological Museum, for anyone touring central and eastern Crete, and for travellers arriving or leaving by the main airport or the Piraeus ferry.
How far is Rethymno from Heraklion?
Rethymno is about 80 km west of Heraklion along the north coast road, roughly an hour and a quarter by car. KTEL buses from Rethymno to Heraklion run 17 times a day, from 06:30 to 23:00, on the timetable valid from 13 October 2026.
Does Rethymno have an airport?
No. Rethymno sits roughly halfway between Heraklion airport and Chania airport, each of them a drive of about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by route-planner estimates. Heraklion airport is about 5 km from Heraklion city, which is one of the practical reasons to base there for a short trip.
Which has the better beach, Rethymno or Heraklion?
Rethymno, clearly. Its town beach starts at the old town and runs about 12 km east, by the municipality's figure, and the Municipality of Rethymno has 14 beaches on the 2026 Blue Flag list. The Municipality of Heraklion has none on that list; the nearest long beach, Ammoudara, lies just west of the city in the neighbouring Municipality of Malevizi.
Is Rethymno or Heraklion better for visiting Knossos?
Heraklion. Knossos is about 5 km south-east of Heraklion's centre and the Archaeological Museum is in the city itself, so both fit into one day with time to spare. From Rethymno, Knossos and the museum make a long day, with close to three hours' driving there and back.
