Heraklion Airport to Agios Nikolaos and Elounda: Bus, Taxi, Transfer or Drive
There is no direct bus: the cheap way is a city bus or a short taxi to Heraklion's KTEL station, a coach to Agios Nikolaos and a local bus on to Elounda; the quick way is about an hour on the national road by taxi, transfer or hire car. Times, the meter, the late-landing plan, and what we could and could not confirm.
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are the far end of a Heraklion transfer: about an hour east of the airport by road, and twice that or more by bus, because there is no direct one. The cheap route is a city bus or a short taxi to KTEL’s central station, a coach to Agios Nikolaos and a local bus on to Elounda. The quick route is the national road east by taxi, pre-booked transfer or hire car — and for two or more people with luggage, or anyone landing after dark, it is the one to take. This guide is a check of published sources, October 2026, not a site visit.

The bus: two changes, two hours or more
KTEL’s published departures for Malia, Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra and Sitia leave from its central station on Ikarou Avenue, by the port — one of Heraklion’s two bus stations — so the first leg is into town. City line 6 (Airport–Ammoudara) runs about every 20 minutes through the day on the urban operator’s timetable from 1 October 2026; a ticket costs €1.30–1.80 bought before boarding and €2.30–2.80 from the driver, depending on the zone. Ask for the stop nearest the KTEL station; with luggage, a taxi is simpler.

The coach east takes roughly 1–1.5 hours to Agios Nikolaos and cost about €7.70 in August 2026; children under six travel free. KTEL’s timetable page lists one Heraklion table for 12–25 October and another for 26–30 October 2026: check the one for your date.
On to Elounda
Elounda is 11 km north of Agios Nikolaos, about a quarter of an hour by road. Local KTEL buses link the two: roughly hourly in season, at about €1.90 and 15 minutes, when our Agios Nikolaos guide checked in August 2026. KTEL published a new timetable for its Agios Nikolaos station, on Epimenidou Street, from 12 October 2026, so check off-season times with the station (28410 22234). Elounda or Agios Nikolaos weighs the two bases.

Taxi and pre-booked transfer
Heraklion has no flat airport fare: the meter runs on the national tariff that our taxi guide sets out. Outside town the higher Tariff 2 applies at any hour — about €1.25 a kilometre on the 2022 schedule — plus the €1.80 start, a €4 airport supplement and a small charge per heavy bag. On those rates, 58 km works out at roughly €78 before luggage, within the €75–95 our Agios Nikolaos guide gives; Elounda is a little more. Read the tariff card in the cab and ask for a receipt.
A pre-booked transfer is a private agreement at a price fixed in advance, not a regulated fare. It buys certainty: a driver waiting, child seats if requested when booking, and no rank queue after a delayed flight. For a family landing late with luggage it usually costs about what the taxi does.
Driving
Collecting a hire car at the airport removes the problem. Route planners put Agios Nikolaos about 58 km and an hour away on the national road east, past Malia and the turn for Neapoli, and Elounda about 63 km by the fastest route. Our airport transfer guide covers the pick-up queues and late collections.
Landing late
The airport operates around the clock, the airport authority says, but the bus chain does not: on the timetables from 1 October 2026, line 6 leaves the airport for the last time at 00:05 on weekdays and Saturdays, and our late-arrival guide found the KTEL coaches east stopping much earlier in the evening. If you land after the evening coaches, plan on a taxi or a transfer booked with your flight number.
The honest downside
The bus is cheap and slow: two changes, two hours or more to Agios Nikolaos and longer to Elounda, and a chain that breaks after the evening coaches. Everything quick costs roughly €75–95 for an hour’s drive. The bus figures are also this guide’s weakest part: KTEL’s timetables themselves could not be read by our checker in October 2026, so the coach and Elounda fares and times are from our August 2026 check.
Worth it if: you land in daylight, travel light, alone or as a pair, and would rather spend under €15 on buses than €80 on the meter. Skip it if: you are a family with luggage, you land after the evening coaches, or you are going on to Elounda with a late check-in — take a taxi, a transfer or the hire car.
