Getting there, entrance by entrance
Fifteen to twenty minutes west of Rethymno off the old national road, and about the same east of Georgioupoli, with several signed entrances along the length and parking that is easy by beach standards — the one genuine luxury this coast offers in August. From Chania it is under an hour; from Heraklion an hour and a half. The bus is approximate here, dropping you on the old road with a walk to the sand, so this is a car beach. The western entrances put you near the river mouth and the reeds; the eastern ones near the taverna clusters and the organised patches.
Reading the sea
Open-coast honest: gorgeous on calm mornings, properly wavy on meltemi afternoons, with lifeguards at the main sections in season and flags that mean what flags mean.
